What are You Building Your Marriage On?

When Cody Carnes released Firm Foundation (He Won't) in December 2021, he was walking through a season of anxiety and instability. Like many of us during the COVID-19 pandemic, he was experiencing emotional upheaval and uncertainty about the future. In the midst of that shaking, he turned to a timeless truth found in Matthew 7:24-27—the parable where Jesus illustrates the critical importance of building your life on a solid foundation: Himself.
The Foundation That Holds
In the parable, Jesus contrasts two builders: one who builds on rock and another who builds on sand. When the storms come—and they always do—only the house built on the rock remains standing. For Carnes, this wasn't just a theological concept; it became deeply personal. The song emerged as a declaration of trust in God's faithfulness, a reminder that even when everything around us feels unstable, Jesus won't fail.
What This Means for Your Marriage
Every marriage faces storms. Financial pressure, health challenges, parenting struggles, misunderstandings, disappointments—the list goes on. In those moments, what you've built your relationship on becomes clear. Have you built on the shifting sand of feelings, circumstances, or your own strength? Or have you anchored yourselves to the Rock that cannot be moved?
The beautiful promise of "Firm Foundation" is this: Christ's faithfulness doesn't waver when ours does. He won't let go when we're struggling to hold on. He won't abandon us in the chaos. He won't fail—even when we feel like we are.
Listen and Discuss Together
This month, we encourage you to carve out time as a couple to listen to Firm Foundation (He Won't) together. Let the lyrics wash over you. Pay attention to the declarations of God's character: faithful, present, unchanging.
Then talk about it:
What storms are we currently facing in our marriage or family?
Where have we been tempted to build on our own understanding rather than on Christ?
How have we seen God prove faithful in past difficult seasons?
What would it look like to make our trust in Him a more conscious, daily practice together?
A Prayer for Your Marriage
As you listen and reflect, consider praying something like this together:
Jesus, You are our firm foundation. When we feel anxious, uncertain, or overwhelmed, anchor us to Your truth. Help us build our marriage not on our own strength, but on Your unchanging faithfulness. Remind us daily that You won't fail us, You won't leave us, and You won't let us go. In the storms ahead, may we stand together on the Rock. Amen.
