The Sweetness of Trusting in Truth!

I don't know if the same thing happens to you, but every time I hear a song that touches my soul or read a poem that moves me, I'm overcome by curiosity: What is the story behind those lyrics? What experience was capable of creating such a profound feeling? I've realized that although each of us interprets a song from our own reality, the heart of the composition is usually an emotion we can all connect with because we've lived through it in different situations. And with this hymn, it was no exception.

I discovered that this hymn was born from a heartbreaking grief. Imagine for a moment losing the love of your life in an accident, just as he was trying to rescue someone else. Learning this background completely shook me. I found myself questioning heaven: How do you carry a pain of that size? Was that sacrifice worth it? However, the hymn itself brought me back to an inexplicable peace: those questions lose their weight when God is at the helm of my life.

This story reminded me that our true North, as Christians, will always be Christ. It moved me to see how this couple, in their own individuality, reflected His love: one giving his life for his neighbor, stepping out of his comfort zone to rescue another; and his wife, understanding that even in the valley of the shadow of death, from the darkest uncertainty, our focus must remain fixed on the Lord. Because the truth does not depend on our circumstances, but on His Word, and that is where I choose to dwell.

"'Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus

Just to take Him at His Word;

Just to rest upon His promise,

Just to know, "Thus saith the Lord!"

Understanding the pain that gave life to these lyrics, and listening to them again, was as if each word gave my heart a hug; it was a reminder that there is no love sweeter than the Lord's. Today I sing these verses knowing that, no matter what "tragedy" I may be going through—whether in my marriage, with my family, or in my job—my mind must anchor itself once again in His grace. It is a sweet and firm reminder that, in the darkest night, His company is real. There is no refuge more secure and comforting than His presence.

"I'm so glad I learned to trust Him,

Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;

And I know that He is with me,

Will be with me to the end."

And so, today I remember once more that there is no place sweeter to dwell than trusting in His truth!
